My name is James Shaw and I'm 35 years old.
I was lucky enough to be born in New Orleans, where we like to say, "we're so far behind we're ahead." It's true, and it makes for one interesting place. There is never a dull moment here. It's like the great John Goodman once said, "If I could put my finger on it, I'd bottle it up and sell it...some people just belong here." I really do feel a connection to it all.
I graduated from LSU in 2007 with a degree in Marketing. Upon graduating, my parents gave me my first “real” camera (a Canon 30D) and I loved figuring it out. I’m thankful to digital for the learning curve it allowed me, but I have since fallen in love with film. What you see here is a mixture of both digital and analog.
After 6 years in marketing/graphic design and a year abroad in France, I figured it was now or never. In the autumn of 2014 I took the plunge and left my day job to pursue photography full time. It has been amazing, but now I need a new hobby.
I love to capture life’s characters and juxtapositions, the oddities and the obvious. I love the access the camera gives me. I love having an excuse to be places I shouldn’t. I’m still fascinated by the power of a still image and the story it can tell.
